Government

- one year after the Dutch surrendered to England in 1664, New Jersey was organized like an Englsih colony - Carteret granted a form of governemnt called, "Concessions," which granted religious liberty to Englishmen - government carried on by a governor, council, and an assembly of twelve to be chosen by the people

Leaders

- the colony had laws meant to discourage slave revolts - If anyone were to commit a crime they would go to court - that no person shall ever, within this Colony, be deprived of the privilege of worshipping Almighty God in a manner - no taxes were to be laid without the agreement of the assembly

Law

- first to ratify the Bill of Rights - third state to ratify the Constitution - 1676, the colony divided between Carteret and a company of Englaish Quakers - voting was ordinary - 1702, became a united crown colony and administered by the royal governor of New York - 1738, seperated from NY under its own royal government

Slavery

- 1664, they offered 60 acres of land per slave to any man who imported slaves - 1690, most people owned one or more slaves - slaves accounted for 12% of the colony's population - after a violent slave uprising, they operated a court system to deal with slave crimes - slaves were encouraged, but free blacks were not
