William J. SimmonsFounder of the 2nd klan 1915-1944

Ku Klux Klan 1920'S

In the klans second go around, it targeted more than just African Americans. Its message of hatred included Jewish, Foreigners, Catholics.

Describe the handout on this blackboard...

D.C. Stephenson,Indianna Grand Dragon destroyed the image of the Ku Klux Klan in the 1920's . He was convicted of second degree murder for the rape and death of Madge Oberholtzer, a young school teacher.

Political Role

There was lots of change happening during the 1920's such as women recieving the right to vote ,African Americans were coming from the south , immigrants coming from europe, cities were growing rapidly. To some people the Klan was seen as a organization that stood for traditional values and moral righteousness , so white Americans would join in hopes that it would keep America safe from "outsiders".

Why people joined?

The Klan became respected by Democrats, political leaders, business owners, and had about 4.5 million members. Indianna's grand dragon D.C Stephenson was convicted of second degree murder , when he was not pardoned he revealed evidence which exposed the corruption of the klan, the political officials they bribed, and other illegal activities that had occured. This began the downfall and decline of the klan.

The lighting of a cross symbolizes "burning away evil" which they would have at rallies, and place in yards of people who were "sining".
