Neverwahs by Ms. Sydow

LocationTribes that farmed or fished lived in one place, but tribes, like the Neverwahs, that hunted and gathered their food, moved with the Buffalo herds across the Great Plains of Texas.

Food The Neverwahs were hunters and gatherers, not farmers. They captured wild horses and rode them to hunt Buffalo on the Texas plains.

Clothing Before settlers arrived, the Neverwahs wore clothes and flat shoes called "moccasins" made exclusively from Buffalo hide. The women wove blankets which they used for many purposes, including layering over their clothes for warmth. Later, when the Neverwahs began farming, they wove long tunics from the cotton they grew.

Name & What it MeansNeverwahs means: "tribe that never existed". This tribe was created by Ms. Sydow as a model so that her 4th grade students could see the kind of work she expected from them.

The Neverwahs lived in TeePees made from Buffalo hide. They painted designs on the hides using red dye made from crushed beetles.
