Founding of the StateNevada became the 36th state on October 31, 1864, as the second of the two states added to the Union during the Civil War. The first state added to the Union at that time was West Virginia.

Origin of the State NameNevada means Sierra Nevada in Spanish. It is also a mountain range in Spain meaning snow covered mountain range. "Nevada" is the Spanish feminine form of "covered in snow".
