Neptune, The Big Blue Marble 2

GalileoGallileo observed Neptune through his telescope in 1612 and 1613.

Urbain Joseph Le Verrier

When Uranus didn't travel exactly as astronomers expected it to, a French mathematician, Urbain Joseph Le Verrier, proposed the position and mass of another unknown planet at the time that could cause the observed changes to Uranus' orbit.. Uranus was the first planet to be discoverd through mathematical predictions in 1846. Seventeen days later, its largest moon, Triton, was also discovered.

Neptune

Neptunes Biggest moon, discoverd shortly after Neptune's discovery.

Triton

Neptune orbits the sun once every 165 years.

The magnetic field of Neptune is about 27 times more powerful than that of Earth. Neptune's winds can be nine times stronger than Earth's.

Neptune has an oval-shaped, dark storm in its southern hemisphere. This "Great Dark Spot," which was large enough to consume the entire Earth, spun counterclockwise, and moved westward at almost 1,200 km (750 miles) per hour.
