First black president of South Africa

Nelson Mandela has awarded a number of prizes such as the Nobel Peace Prize. He has also been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, United Nations Prize in the Field of Human Rights, and many more. He is famous because of him being the first black president of South Africa. He also worked for human rights.

Nelson Mandela was arrested in 1962 for incitement to strike and leaving the country without a passport. Later in 1963 a new trial opened and he was sentenced life in prison for leading the MK which was held for violent acts (such as bombings) and new charges of sabotage.

Why Mandela will be remembered

Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918. He went to a primary school near Quno and was given the name 'Nelson' from his teacher, as his birth name was Rolihlahla Mandela. He enrols at the University College of Fort Hare, in 1939 and was expelled in 1940. Completes BA through the University of South Africa (UNISA). He then begins to attend African National Congress (ANC) meetings informally. Elected national secretary of the ANCYL in 1948 and is elected president 3 years later in 1951 the ANC was banned in 1960. He was arrested in 1962 after he returned to South Africa. He was sent to 3 different prisons over his 27 years in prison. In 1990 he was released and the ANC was unbanned and he was elected deputy president of it. In 1993 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He then became the first black president of South Africa in 1994. In 2013 he passes in his home in Johannesburg.
