Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918 in Umtata, South Africa. In 1944 he joined the ANC and apartheid began that same year.Mandela was arrested in 1962, he was convicted of sabotage and conspiracy and sentenced to life in prison. While he was in prison for 27 years, antiapartheid forces grew stronger and people argued that he should be free. When Nelson was in jail the government relized that the ANC was a legal political organization so they let him out.In April 1994 the first South African election in which all races could vote was held. The ANC won a majority of the Assembly seats, and Mandela became president. Later in 1997 he stepped down as the head of ANC. In 1999 he retired as president. He died at his home in Houghton, Johannesburg on Dec. 5, 2013.
