PRISIONMandela served over 27 years in prison, initially on Robben Island, and later in Pollsmoor Prison and Victor Verster Prison. An international campaign lobbied for his release. He was released in 1990, during a time of escalating civil strife.

WHO WAS NELSON MANDELA?He was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary politician. Borned in 1918, he became the President of the African National Congress from 1991 to 1998.

"No one in my family had ever attended school [...] On the first day of school my teacher, Miss Mdingane, gave each of us an English name. This was the custom among Africans in those days and was undoubtedly due to the British bias of our education. That day, Miss Mdingane told me that my new name was Nelson. Why this particular name I have no idea." — Mandela, 1994

SCHOOLAfter finishing high school, he began studying at the University College of Fort Hare for his Bachelor of Arts. There he was elected to the Student Representative Council and expelled along with a partner for participating in a student strike. He moved to Johannesburg where he completed his undergraduate studies at Unisa correspondence in 1941. He then studied law at the University of Witwatersrand, graduating in 1943.

GOVERNMENTHis government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid through tackling institutionalised racism, poverty and inequality, and fostering racial reconciliation.
