[2015] Dylan Cook: Nelson Mandela

1- Nelson Mandela and his family were taken from their small village of Mvezo, and forced them to move to Qunu. Nelson was, from an early age, exposed to a family full of pride and this influenced him greatly later in life2- After Nelsons father died of tuberculosis, he was put under the supervision of the regent Jongintaba, this influenced his later life becuase this is what exposed him to politics.3- Nelson attended Fort Hare University, he bacame close friends with Oliver Tambo and Kaiser "K.D" Matanzima. At this school Nelson joined a group that was boycotting the school. This was his first time showing his intrest in politics.

-Sakharov Prize-1988- Prize named after soviet scientist and dissident Andrei Sajharov. It is awarded for freedom of thought.-Nobel Peace Prize- 1993- A prize given to people who achive great feats in chemistry, physics, physiology, medicine, and literature. Given to those who "shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."-Time's Person of the year-1993- An anuual issue of the United States news magazine Time features and profiles a person, group, idea or object that "for better of for worse.... has done the most to influence the events of the year."-Bharat Ratna- 1990- The highest civilian award of the Republic of India. Given for "recognition of exceptional service/performance of the highest order."-Congressional Gold Medal-1998- Awarded by the US congress. It is awarded to persons "who ahve performed an achivement that has an impact on American histoy and culture that is likely to be recognized as a major achievement in the recipient's field long after the achievement."-Gandhi Peace Prize-2001- A prize that is annually awarded by the governments of India. It is given to people who contribute toward social, economic and political transformation throught non-violent and other Gandhian methods.-Presidential Medal of Freedom- 2002- Award given by the president of the United states. Given for "an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.

Education

He first attended Wesleyan mission school, here he was given the name Nelson. He attended Clarkebury Boarding school at 16, he also attended college at Fort Beaufort. He later went on to study law at the University of Witswatersrand.

Significance

Nelson Mandela was one of few statesmen to have achived almost universal respect around the world. He played roles in fighting apartheid, his imprisonment on Robben Island. Nelson became a symbol of the struggle of oppresed people around the world. Nelson was South Africas first democratically elected president in 1994. He worked to unify the different races that were living in Africa. Nelson became a figurehead of peace around the wolrd and influenced many groups of people to change their ways. Nelson saved lives, and chaged the course of history. His strong will and big ideals were a huge part in his political power.
