In 1949, Mr.Mandela encouraged South Africans to try to stop apartheid. Nelson Mandela was put on trial because of trying to defeat the government. In 1962, he was caught and put to jail. Two years later, Nelson Mandela was sentenced to life in prison.

Nelson Mandela was born on July 18,1918 into the Mediba clan in Mvezo, Transkei. His father died of tuberculosis when he was only 12 years old in the year 1930. In school,a british teacher named Miss Mdingane renamed him "Nelson".His real name was "Rolihlahla" which means "pulling the branch of a tree" or "troublemaker". In 1944, when Nelson Mandela was a grown man he decided to join the African National Congress(ANC). It is a group that tried to stop apartheid.

Nelson Mandela was finally allowed to leave prison in 1990. He spent 27 years there. In 1994, Mr. Mandela was elected president.

In 1995, Nelson Mandela set up a Truth and Reconciliation (TRC). It offered a pardon to people who did crimes during the apartheid area.

Sadly, on December 5 , 2013 Nelson Mandela passed away. He teached a lot of people to never give up and to be brave. He was a great hero and a great teacher.
