National Symbol - American Bald Eagle

Benjamin Franklin disapproved the eagle as the national bird stating, "The bald eagle is a bird of bad moral character." However in 1789 George Washington became our 1st President and the American Bald Eagle became our national bird. It was later stated that, "The founding fathers made an appropriate chioce" by John F. Kennedy. He also said, "the fierce beauty and proud imdependence of this great bird symbolizes the strength and freedom of America."

The bald eagle is a huge bird with a wing span of 7 feet. On average these birds are about 25 inches long and weigh about 11 pounds. Bald eagles have been known to live for 20 to 30 years with some in captivity living to the ripe old age of 50.
