National Park Service

Our History Since 1872 the United States National Park System has grown vastly from just Yellowstone National Park. August 25th, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed the Organic Act creating the NPS and stating its purpose. In 1933 Roosevelt consolidated all national parks and memorials into the system.

Our Purpose“is to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wild life therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations.”
