Nassau County Overdose Prevention & Narcan Training-About 300 deaths in 2012-2014- Drugs overdose is 9th leading cause of death in the US in 2013.- Opioid overdose is the leading cause of accidental deaths.- Most commonly prescribed opioids are Morphine, Oxycontin, Vicodin, Darvon, Opana, Demerol and Dilaudid - Naloxone (NARCAN) is an antidote to opiods- NARCAN is given by injection (upper arm or thigh) or by nasal spray- NARCAN only works for opioid drugs (Nassau County DOH, 2014)

* Population 1,339,532, 453 square miles* 65.5% -- Non-Hispanic white ; 14.58% of Hispanics; 11.1% Black * 7.7% Asian Pacific Islanders* Median age in Nassau County is 41 years old* Chronic health conditions include Type 2 Diabetes, HIV/AIDS, Asthma/COPD* Due to increase in heroin related drug over dose deaths. county executives have madated that police officer carry drug to prevent death from opiod overdose (Nassau County DOH, 2014)

- Become a certified trained NARCAN administrator- Advise high risk populations to call 911 right away because they will recieve this life saving medication- Advise family members of known heroin/opiod drug user to get trainedOutcomeCommunity members will not be afraid to call police because they know that police/EMS/Firefighters are trained to help. Family members will be able to treat patient before emergency response arrives, decreaseing the chances of long term effects of anoxia. (Nassau County Overdose Prevention and NARCAN Training, 2015)

Voulnerable Population: Low Income Families- Divided into affluent and lowincome communities- Do not have same access to health care- Higher incidence of chronic illnesses such as HIV, Type 2 Diabetes, CHF, Asthma and COPDNassau University Medical Center serves the largest population of low income, un-insured or under-insured population. Community clinics associated with this hospital are found in low-income communties to serve this popluation. (Nassau Count DOH, 2014)
