A person who is excessively vain, self-absorbed

Narcissus was a handsome but arrogant man. He rejected every one of his many admirers in contempt, including the nymph Echo, who faded away in despair. Nemesis, the goddess of revenge, heard her prayers for vengeance and cursed Narcissus to fall in love with his reflection in a pond. Nemesis also does this in another version of the myth, but for a young man, Ameinias, who committed suicide after Narcissus refused him. Some say Narcissus watched his reflection until he died of longing, or that he stabbed himself out of desperation. The white narcissus flower was born from his dying life’s blood.

Connection to English Word: Narcissus was a conceited man who fell in love with his own reflection, so it is fitting that the word “narcissist” is used to describe someone who is self-absorbed.

Sentence: People who often post photos of themselves online solely to receive compliments are considered narcissists by many.
