South West Africa (Namibia) formally becomes a German colony.1904-7: German troops ruthlessly suppress “native” resistance.9 July 1915: South Africa, fighting on the side of the Allies in WWI, defeats German troops in Namibia.4 June 1948: The National Party comes to power in South Africa and begins implementing the policy of apartheid, which was extended to Namibia.27 October 1966: UN terminates South Africa’s mandate over Namibia; the South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO) launches the armed struggle.25 January 1968: UN Security Council adopts its first resolution on Namibia.21 July 1971: International Court of Justice advises that South Africa’s presence in Namibia being illegal, Pretoria was under obligation to withdraw its administration from the Territory.20 December 1976: UN General Assembly recognizes SWAPO as the “sole and authentic” representative of the people of Namibia.29 September 1978: UN Security Council adopts the Namibia Settlement Plan (Resolution 435 (1978)).1 April 1989: Implementation of the Settlement Plan begins but is marred by the “April massacre.”7 April 1989: South Africa announces “suspension” of implementation process.13 May 1989: Formal “resumption” of the implementation process.7-11 November 1989: First democratic elections in Namibia under the “supervision and control” of the United Nations are held.
