Muslim civilization

Muhammad awoke from a dream to find himself in the presense of an angel who commanded him to spread Allah's message. Under the protection of his uncle, a well-liked politician, Muhammad spread his news, in the city of Mecca. After the death of his uncle Mecca reacted violently to Muhammad's teachings causing him to flee to Medina in an event called the Hijra. His teachings were accepted in Medina and that is where he built the first mosque. In Medina he began to separate his new religion from Christianity and Judaism. Muhammad soon found himself leading the Muslim community into battle defending their faith, winning many battles that Mecca waged against them.

Cultural Achievements

1. Allah is God and Muhammad is His prophet2. The performance of five daily prayers3. The giving of alms4. Fasting during the month of Ramadan 5. Those who are financialy and physically able must visit Mecca in their lifetime.

Many medical advancements have been made by the Muslim community, such as mercuric chloride. The art of caligraphy is a distinct characteristic to Islamic art. The Dome of Rock is one of the oldest works of Islamic architecture and is one of Jerusalem's most well known landmarks becuase of it's beautiful and grand strucutre. The Dome of Rock was built in the late seventh century.

Abu Bakr

Abu Bakr was the first caliph and one of Muhammad's closest companions.

Qur'an

The Qur'an is the text which is the basis for Islam. Both the Sunnis and the Shias believe that this religous record was a revalation from Allah. The literal meaning of Qur'an means recitation. Muslims believe that the Qur'an was verbally recited to Allah by the angel Jibril. by, Grace Davis
