400-1400

Middle Ages

During the Renaissance, secular and sacred music influenced each other. Vocal and instrumental music saw the same advent of personal expression and innovation that signified this period's cultural and scientific revival.

"Baroque" is term applied to various forms of 17th Century art. Baroque music is highly ornamental with complex chord sequences and new instrumental techniques.

During this period of music, varied and eclectic styles emerged, along with extensive experimentation with sound. Electronics were introduced mid-century.

The music styling of this era coincided with the Romanticism movement. Popular musical themes included nature, mystic and spiritual influences, and nationalism.

Medieval music was both sacred and secular. String instruments are representative of this style. Genres of this era include Gregorain chant, motet, and madrigal.

The Classical period brought music that focused on clear melodies, light sounds, and instrumental compositions. Instrumental stylings include sonatas, trios, string quartets, symphonies and concertos.

21st Century music is also known as post-modernistic. Music in this era is is eclectic with multiple genres, styles, and purposes.
