Musee du Louvre

It currently covers a total area of 652,300 square feet.

It is one of the biggest museums in the world and is the most visited museum in the world.

The Louvre was not originally built to house a museum; in fact, the structure was built some 600 years prior to its conversion into the museum it is today. The Louvre was built as a fortress to protect against possible raids at the order of King Phillipe-Auguste. Because the construction was done over a long period of time there were several architects. It was finished in 1793.

€16 for access to the permanent collections and temporary exhibitions in both the Louvre and the Musée Eugène Delacroix. Admission is free for anyone under eighteen and admission is free for all visitors on the first Sunday of each month and on July 14.

The museum is open every day except Tuesday and the following French holidays: January 1, May 1 and December 25.Monday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday: from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.Wednesday, Friday: from 9 a.m. to 9:45 p.m.

More than 35,000 works are on display at any given time.
