MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY

Refers to a group of more than 30 inherited diseases that cause muscle weakness and muscle loss. The muslces are usually susceptible to damage. All forms of muscular dystrophy become worse with age and are progressive.

There is no cure for muscular dystrophy. Therapy depends on the severity of the symptoms and includes medication for muscle weakness and spasm, Like Mexilitine or Dantrolene. Steroids and immunosuppressive medications are sometimes used to decrease the muscle destruction. Other treatments include physical therapy, bracing devices, and surgery.

-Muscle weakness-Lack of coordination-Difficulty walking-Frozen joints-Frequent falls

Although debated, a key element in muscular dystrophy is absence of dystrophyin, which is a structural element in muscle fiber. It also stabilizes the plasma membrane, high stres on the membrane causes microlesions to form leading to the muscle deterioration.
