Mt. Vesuvius

-The City of, Naples is approximately 14.1 miles away from Mount. Vesuvius.(See pict. below)

-Caused by 2 convergent boundaries. (Collision of two tectonic plates)African Plate pushing beneath the Eurasian Plate.

-Complex Stratovolcano-Considered to be one of the MOST DANGEROUS VOLCANOES Because:-Close proximity to Naples.-Completely Wiped-out the city of Pompeii in 79 A.D.

Mount Vesuvius

The eruption of Mount. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. is best known for the thousands (approximately 16,000 people) that lost their lives on August 26, 79 A.D. at 1 PM. These people died because of the cloud of ash that blanketed the city but also the lava. There are many beings (people, animals)that were preserved by the ash, encapsulating the agony of the people on that fatefull day. (See picture below)

-The eruption waves made of stone, ash, and fumes can reach heigths of 20.5 miles high.-Fragments of rock, lava, or tephra fell for a day straight after the pyroclastic eruption and covered Pompeii.-Spews 1.5 tons of lava per second.

Fun Fact:Tephra are the Rocks that rocket out of the Volcano!

-Most recent Eruption was in 1944.- The biggest eruption since Pompeii, 79 A.D. was the eruption in 1631, Killed approximately 3,500 citizens of Naples because of the ash and viscous lava.-Has had about 200 or more eruptions since it was created about 17,000 years ago.-Has had periods of calmness lasting at least a few decades long.

Eruption in 1944

Encased in Ash.NOT LAVA

Fun Fact: Only active volcano in the Mainland Europe.

-Explosive eruptions and pyroclastic flows (A dense, destructive mass of very hot ash, lava fragments, and gases ejected explosively from a volcano and typically flowing downslope at great speeds)

-Mount Vesuvius standing 4190 feet tall is a composite volcano of a mix of layers of lava flows, volcanic ash, cinders. It consists of a volcanic cone, called Gran Cono, that was built inside a summit Caldera, called Mount Somma.Caldera- a large volcanic crater, typically formed by a major eruption leading to the collapse of the mouth of the volcano. Caused by a collapse in the Magma chamber after a large eruption.

ANNOUNCEMENTWith modern technology we determined months ago that Vesuvius would erupt but only now has the public truly taken an interest.-IT WILL ERUPT ON FEBRUARY 25, 2014 at 12:00 PM.

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENTThe city of Naples may be in trouble! Geologists have noticed tremors and the public can see dark cloud coming out of the top of Mt. Vesuvius! All inhabitants must evacuate before the ash encases Naples, grab only the necessities! Only the houses closest to the volcano will be gone!

After the Eruption!:-Soil will be 100% richer and more fertile.-Skies will be darker due to smog (Would not recommend Athsmatics stay inside or elsewhere) AIR WILL BE DRY-The Area of Naples closest to Vesuvius will be decimated by the Ash and Lava.

FELSIC LAVAThick Lava, it might reach Naples but is too thick to travel quickly
