On May 18th, 1980, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck at 8:32 a.m. causing a landslide that depressurized the volcanos magma system, triggering an explosion. The explosion sent rock, ash, volcanic gas, and steam 300 miles per hour upward and outward to the north.
