Mount Unzen is part of a group of overlapping stratovolcanoes. A stratovolcano is built up of alternate layers of lava and ash.

It is an active dome complex. Dome means it is a roughly circular mound-shaped protrusion resulting from the slow extrusion of viscous lava from a volcano.

The most recent activity of this volcano is from 1990-1995. Mount Unzen's last eruption was in May 1996

Facts:1. The magma type found in Mount Unzen is called andesite.2. Mount Unzen is still active today. (meaning it has erupted in the last 10,000 years.)3. Mount Unzen's tallest peak is Mount Fugen at 4,462 ft tall.

The largest eruption during Mount Unzen's recent activity occured on June 3, 1991. This eruption killed 43 people. In 1792, the collapse of one of its several lava domes triggered a tsunami that killed about 15,000 people in Japan’s worst-ever volcanic-related disaster.
