Prejudice:In the videos prejudice was displayed in various ways. In the video "A Girl Like Me" every single young girl described ways that others treated them based on their skin color. They explained their feelings towards the color of their skin, such as that they have made believed their entire lives that they would be prettier if they had lighter skin. During the experiment of the white and black doll, even young children were showing signs of prejudices by constantly choosing the white doll because it looked nicer. It is important that we increase awareness of current prejudices because we need to teach young children that skin color does not matter. We need to teach young children how to love one another and respect one another.
Stereotypes:In the video "A Girl Like Me" stereotypes were discussed closely. The girls described various words that they were referred as, such as "ghetto" and "not smart". They mentioned that the look of their hair was steretyped as being "kinky" because of their natural curl. In the audition video of Susan Boyle, she walked onto the stage and instantly everyone in the audience was making faces of annoyance and disgust. Stereotypes affect our behavior by judging others and immediatly setting a specific opinion of them without any reason.Stereotypes of groupd could be decreased by educating peopl and raising awareness of how stereotyping is not okay and teaching people to give others a try without any initial judgement.
Labels:The connotations attached to labels affects our behavior by constantly judging others. We have specific labels in our heads that when we see someone that meets that criteria we constantly judge. In the video with Susan Boyle, the minute she walked onto the stage she was labeled as being a crazy old lady that couldnt sing, based on her personality and her age. But once she began to sing that label was taken down.
