The name San Diego De Alcala, or Saint Didacus Alcala, was given to locality byCaptian Viscaino upon his arrival from New Spain. In the late 1700's, Father Fermin Francisco de Lasuen, the third pastor, became frustrated with the inability to build a successful mission because the mission struggled.San Diego de Alcala was the first misson established in California.The first seeds of agriculture were planted at the mission which laid the foundations for the great agriculture state of Califorina today.The missions were built to claim land and to have new people of the Catholic religion.

The mission San Diego De Alcala was founded on July 16, 1769.

One of the San Diego de Alcala's bells is original for the late 1700's.

Mission San Diego de Alcala was the first of the 21 California missions. Mission San Diego de Alcala marks the birthplace of Christianity in the far west of California.The highest population at mission San Diego De Alcala is 1,829 people.
