In this book, the protagonist, Jacob Portman, goes on an adventure to find the meaning of his dead granfather's last words: "Find the bird. In the loop. On the other side of the old man's grave. September third, 1940. Emerson-the letter". To learn more about his grandfather's past and thinking this could be the answer to the last words that his grandfather had uttered, he went to his hometown, Cairnholm Island, Wales, UK, There, he had found some answers. His grandfather had found a loophole that kept repeating the same day: September third, 1940. And inside that loophole, he found a group of children called "The Peculiars".
The Peculiars are children that have fascinating abilities. One of them is able to carry a few hundred pounds without breaking a sweat. Another is a boy who has some uncanny predictions about the future. There is also a girl who is able to conjure fire out of her hands. These children and their headmistress, Miss Peregrine (the bird), have been hidden away for more than seventy years in the loophole, living the same day over and over again: Spetember third, 1940. But these children are hiding from monsters that live to feast on the Peculiar children: The Hollowgasts.

A man is dead and his insides were scraped out, a hint that a Hollowgast was there. Jacob and his friends are there to find out if a Hollowgast was really behind the murder. But as soon as they find out what really caused it, their plan backfires. They were discovered... By a Hollowgast.
