Miss. Hickory is not your ordinary doll. She is made from an apple-wood twig and has a hickory nut for a head. She has quit the temper and is not friendly to the animals around her. Miss Hickory was told by Crow that Great Granny Brown is going to Boston for the winter, leaving Miss Hickory all alone to survive the New Hampshire winter. Mrs. Hickory refuses to believe the news from Crow but finds out that the news is all true. Mrs. Hickory lives in a corn cob house that was taken over by chipmunks, leaving her homeless. Ethics:Activity 1: The students will write and discuss what they think it means to be trustworthy. Fine Arts:Activity 1: The students will create a Mrs. Hickory doll. Miss. Hickory is made from an apple-wood twig, cloth, and a hickory nut for her head. With adult supervision using a hot glue gun the students will create a Miss. Hickory doll.Activity 2: The students will create a home for Mrs. Hickory that will help her survive the cold New Hampshire winter. Using various materials provided by the teacher (popsicle sticks, cloth, markers ect.) students will create a home for Miss. Hickory. * Students can write how their house they made will help Mrs. Hickory survive the New Hampshire winter.

English Language Art:Activity 1: Pretend you’re Miss. Hickory and just found out from Crow that, Great Granny Brown is going to Boston for the winter. Write a persuasive letter to Great Granny Brown to convince her to stay in New Hampshire for the winter.Activity 2: Compare and contrast how Miss. Hickory treated the animals around her in the beginning of the book and the end of the book.

ScienceActivity 1: The students will pick an animal from the book and research the animal.Choose one animal from Mrs. Hickory, then find a photo of your animal and research the follow:1. Where does your animal live?2. Make a list of what your animal eats?3. Does your animal hibernate for winter?4. Name one predator of your animal.5. What is the anatomy of your animal?Activity 2: The students will pick a tree that grows in New Hampshire. Then the students will make a diagram of the tree and label the different parts including a section on sap production.
