MINERALS & ROCKS

In geology, a rock is a naturally occurring solid made up of minerals and/or mineraloids. The Earth's outer solid layer, the lithosphere, is made of rock.. The rocks can be dividited in three main groups: -Igneous -Metamorphic -Sedimentary

Igneous rocks are rocks formed by the cooling and the solidification of magma. They can be plutonic (granite) or volcanic (basalt, pumice and obsidian).

igneous rocks

Metamorphic rocks are formed by the heat and pressure to igneous or other metamorphic rocks. These rocks do don't melt, but their phisical and/or chemical organization changes a lot. Two types: foliated and non-foliated.

Sedimetary rocks

Minerals are naturally occurring, inorganic solid substances. They have a definite chemical composition and specific physical properties. If a mineral is liquid is called mineraloid. Two types: silicates and non silicates.

They're made up of oxigen and silicon. They are the most abundant on the Earth. Common silicates: -Quartz -Feldspar -Mica -Olivine -Kyanite

Non-silicates are all the minerals that they do not contain silicon. They are classified as: -Native elements . -Oxides . -Sulphides . -Carbonates . -Halides .
