STATUS OF MEXICO'S WORKERS IN THE U.S.*3 million Mexican work in the United States as undocumented immigrants.*They do jobs that people born in the U.S. don't want.*Mexican workers send $9 billion each year to families in Mexico.*Mexico's government is claiming for the rights of this workers.

Mexico set aside a strip of land of 20 km along the United States Border.In this area, any foreign nation can set up a factory called a maquiladora

Mexico, Canada and the U.S. joined together to ratify the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

The 2nd largest free-trade zone in the world.It helped Mexico's economy.

Mexican workers are cheaper than other workers and goods can be produced more cheaply.Mexican workers earn more than twice the salary of the average Mexican worker

ECONOMIC GROWTH

Mexico's gross domestic product grew a 7%.Mexico is the 2nd largest trading partner of U.S.

Mexico signed trade agreements with other Central and South American countries,as well as European Nations and Israel.

January 1st, 1994.The same day NAFTA took effect. A revolt in Chiapas ocurred.It lasted 10 days.

Native people and peasants protested and claimed for:land, teachers, schools, health care, and roads.

Mexicans elected Vicente Fox from the PAN. This event ended with 70 years of corrupt and bad government held by the PRI
