OriginThe Aztecs believed that they would see a sign - an eagle perched on a cactus with a snake in its mouth - and they believed this was where they were supposed to build their capitol. They saw just this sign on an island in the middle of Lake Texcoco. On June 8th, 1325, their city was born.In 1519, Hernan Cortez and his Spanish army arrived. They took over the city and destroyed it. Then they began building a new city that Cortez called Mexico.
