During Stage 4, a butterfly emerges from the chrysalis or pupa to go on to lay eggs and continue the cycle.

During stage 3, the caterpillar becomes a chrysalis, a hard, protective, cocoon that encases the pupa. There is no feeding at this stage.

During Stage 2, the eggs hatch into larvae (caterpillars). Larvae are freeform, worm-like moving and eating creatures. Caterpillars are brightly colored and spiny.

During Stage 1, the butterfly lays eggs.
