Mentorship provides numerous opportunities for individuals to use their own expeirences and knowledge they have gained through these experiences to help others. For me, mentoring means to take in a mentees' concerns and questions and use your own expeirence to provide honest and helpful advice and answers for the mentee that will guide them through their current situation and hopefully provide better results. This may not always be approving of their current actions and may require constructive criticism. Mentoring someone is giving the best of yourself to help better someone else in their journey and using your own situations to educate someone with less expeirence in that situation. There are a few qualities that define good mentorship for me. For example, to be a good mentor, you must have perserverance to show that with a little hard work, whatever you attempt to do can be accomplished. Another quality is kindness which is a given, but is essential to give all you have to offer to another individual who needs all the help you can offer. Having empathy runs hand-in-hand with kindness, but is a must because in order to give the best advice, you must be able to see the challenges someone else is facing and be able to relate to give the most relative guidance. In the case of De La Salle, he mentored the Brothers through giving them guidance of running the schools and teaching the students. This guidance was through encouraging their practices that were productive and done correctly, along with giving them criticism of where they are lacking and need to correct their actions. He continually gave advice in the letters that was given with the intent to better the Brothers and was not given to make them feel belittled. His main goal with his mentorship was to produce better Brothers and Educators. What I learned from these letters that we read was that mentoring is very focused on guiding the mentees through these new situations and the ulitmate goal of the mentoring is to produce better educators and give them the confidence in their profession choice that they may have not had before. De La Salle was an exceptional mentor who always went beyond his duties by writing the Brothers consistently and checking up on them regularly to ensure that there were no problems. He could have easily just waited for letters from the Brothers when there was issues, but instead he wrote them and guided them through day-to-day operations which prevented large-scale issues to occur for the Brothers. He also was very in-tune with the Brothers and understood the tones and what was not said in the letters and addressed underlying issues before they were brought up which was an exceptional skill for him as a mentor. There are a few challenges that face you as a mentor. For example, when the mentee is faced with an issue that you have yet to face, it makes it difficult to give great advice when you are unsure yourself. It also can be stressful because these mentees are looking up to you and taking your advice and therefore if they fail when following your advice, it can be disheartening. In the case of a mentee who does not want to change, I do believe it is possible to mentor them. Although the ultimate goal is to help these individuals and gudie them and suggest changes and for them to follow them, it is not impossible to mentor them if they do not. Everyone comes to change on their own time and therefore it may take someone a little longer to accept the change and act it in their own life. As a mentor, all you can do is suggest new courses of action and explain your reasoning and hopefully they will choose on their own time down the road to change themselves after hearing your advice. Giving your suggestions will not hurt and you could also just listen to their outlook as well and do as much as you can to provide feedback on what their choices are.
