Gregor Mendel
By: Asghar Shah, Ms. D'Alessio Pr.6
Scientific Summary of the ResearchMendel conducted various crosses during his research. His crosses mainly dealt with pea plants and the properties they possess. Through his work Mendel came up with 3 laws. 1) The Law of Segregation: a gene pair defines each inherited trait. Offspring inherit one genetic allele from each parent when gametes unite in fertilization.2) The Law of Independent Assortment: The inheritance of one trait has no effect on the inheritance of another3) The Law of Dominance: An organism with alleles of a gene will show the form that is dominant.
Significane of research to discovery of the DNA structureThe work of Gregor Mendel lead Mendel to be deemed the "Father of Genetics". Without the work of Mendel discovering different properties of inheritance and properties of genes Watson and Crick would not be able to properly discover the DNA structure because they would not know about the properties of the genes
Time Frame of Research and BackgroundMendel’s research with pea plants took place between 1856-1863. The results were published in 1865. He attended the University of Vienna and the University of Olmütz. There he studied physics, philosophy, chemistry and mathematics. He was awarded the Medal of the Heitzing Horticultural Society in 1882.
