Should Marijuana be a Medical Option?



Over the years, the issue of using marijuana for medical reasons has been a reoccuring issue in the United States. 18 states, as well as the District of Columbia, have legalized it for medical use. Yet, the federal government still has it schedule oned which means it has no medical use at all and is also illegal.

-Recent research shows that marijuana has detrimental effects on the brain, lungs, heart and fertility-The FDA says marijuana has no additive medical benefit of any kind-"the raw marijuana plant material -- itself containing hundreds of unknown components -- has not met FDA's standards of safety and efficacy"-FDA-"(1) marijuana has a high potential for abuse; (2) it has no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States (3)'...there is currently sound evidence that smoked marijuana is harmful.'

Medical marijuana is used for a variety of ailments and conditions, including:-Easing nausea and vomiting.-Stimulating appetite in chemotherapy and/or AIDS patients.-Reducing eye pressure in glaucoma patients.-Managing chronic pain.-Treating gastrointestinal illnesses.-It has also beenseen to have many beneficial qualities to patients with cancer and other diseases
