Measures of Center

Mean

Median

Mode

The Mean is also commonly called the average. You find the mean by adding the values, and by dividing the sum by the number of values. The mean is a good value to use when describing normally distributed data.

Skewed data has extremely high or extremely low values that "pull" the mean away from center.

The Median is the center value. It is important to remember to put all the values in order from smallest to largest before finding the median. If there is an even number of values, average the two middle values to find the median. The median is great for describing data with a skewed distribution.

Normal distributions are symmetric, so any extremely high values balance out any extremely low values when calculating the mean.

The Mode is the most frequently occuring value. On a histogram, the mode will have the highest bar. The mode is also used to describe categorical data.
