The History of the sucessful McDonald's businessBy: Joshua Lee

1) How it Begin: Mcdonald's brothers(1930-1937)

Two brothers, named Richard and Maurice, left for New Hampshire to southern California in 1930s, hoping to find a new job as a movie business. However, as movie business it didn't turn out great. The brothers were trying to find a new way to make a living, so they came up with an idea. In 1937, they open their own drive-in restaurant and sold mostly hot dogs. Few years later, their business became so successful that they decided to move to a bigger restaurant in San Bernardino naming it the "McDonald's Brothers Burger Bar Drive-In".

In 1948, the brothers fired all the carhops and closed the "McDonald's Brothers Burger Bar Dive-In" . Then they went into a big construction to install larger grills witch a new radical system to prepare the food. Then three months later, the McDonald's Brothers reopen. They installed a new system that prepared food faster, lowered the prices, and increased sales. They got rid of the old menu with a new one, and got rid of everything like knifes, spoons, forks, regular plates and glasses replacing them with only paper plates and paper cups. All the food on the new menu could be held in your hand and be eaten while driving a car. They sold hamburgers and cheeseburgers for about 15 cents. They also changed how the food was prepared and hired more chefs that had to prepare the same thing over and over again. Thus, the new resturant was an easy way to make cheap fast foods.

Ray Kroc, a Multimixer salesman, visited McDonald's intending to sell the brothers more Multimixers. Ray Kroc is fascinated by their operation. Kroc was eagered to go into the business with them and spread their Speedee Service System idea nationwide. Thus, Kroc convinced the brothers to let him open new McDonald's restaurants and told them that it will make them even richer. Next, a contract was signed to have rights to use the name McDonald's. Kroc has open 100th Mcdonald's.By 1961, Ray Kroc have purchased the interests of the McDonald brothers along with rights to the McDonald's name for $2.7 million. In 1966 McDonald's had their first commercial, in 1968 they introduced the Big Mac, and in 1969 they changed the McDonald's logo to a Golden Arches. Then in 1984 Ray Kroc passed away, up to his death, he has opened 7,778 McDonald's in 32 countries and improved the McDonald's business greatly.

4) The success of McDonald's

4) Ray Kroc (1954-1984)

By the end of 1940s, the McDonald's brothers were tired of the Drive-In business. The McDonald's brothers had to constantly looking for new car hops, hiring new chiefs which many of them left for new jobs that paid more money, and replacing the utensils that the teen customers often broke or stole. Therefore they were thinking about selling the restaurant, but then they suddenly came up with a better idea.

Chew on This by Schlosser and Wilson is about the history of how the fast food restaurants have developed and grew. I mainly focused on the evolution of McDonald’s: how the exploitative corporations first started and grew into a multi-conglomerate. As I read about the progression of McDonald’s, I decided to make a timeline of how McDonald’s became a successful business and what was their strategy. McDonald is one of the oldest and world’s largest chain of hamburger fast food restaurant. Knowing this, I thought it would be an interesting topic to discuss about their advancement since many people are curious about it. Since 1940, McDonald's has been making many changes and improvements. As a result, that’s what made it so prosperous and rich. I want to capture all their unique features and characteristics that makes McDonald's stand out from many other fast food restaurants.
