- It was founded in 1760.-Mayagüez means "place of water". -The initiator of its foundation was Don Faustino Matos.
Typical Foods
The flag of Mayagüez contains a red cross that symbolizes Christianity and four flames. The background is dark green symbolizes the woods area where Christopher Colombus used to keep his weapons.
- Rice with chicken-Beef stew and stewed beans-Street style chicken skewers(pinchos)*Mayagüez is also very known for its mangos. Mayagüez has over thirty species of mangos from India. The most common mangos are the Mayagüezano, Mangotino and the Largo.
