Particulate Model of Matter

LIQUID

SOLID

GASEOUS

Liquids has no definite shape but has definite volume. Hence, it can take the shape of its container and it cannot be compressed. The forces of attraction in the particles are moderate, and they can move freely by sliding over one another.

Gas has no definite shape and volume. Hence, it can be compressed to a certain extent. Compressed air contains much pressure and used in tires. The force of attraction in the particles are low, and moves around randomly and rapidly in all directions.

Solids has definite shape and volume. Its shape is fixed and cannot be changed unless force is applied to it. Its molecules are fixed and vibrate in its fixed postions.

What causes a substance to change its state?

Particles of matter have contant motion, when the matter changes temperature, the kinetic energy of the movement of the particle changes with it, causing the particles to either move towards each other, or away.
