first great painter of Renaissance

- born as Tommaso di Ser Giovanni di Simone - name a take off of the nickname Maso, which meant a "fat," "big," "clumsy," or "messy" Tom - brother Giovanni also became painter - no documents of education (likely moved to Florence for apprenticeship at 12)

Masaccio

- some works were destroyed- four frescos still exist- died young, rumored to be poisoned by rival

- went to Rome with Masolino, eliminating the Gothic and Byzantine influence- praised for realistic people and movement- also recognized for ability to show depth
