Mary Mcleod Bethune was born in 1875, Mayesville South Carolina. She also was the fifteenth of seventeen children (siblings). Some of her siblings were born into slavery and sold away, but not FAR away from their family. Her birthday is/was on July 10. Mary Mcleod Bethune went to pick cotton on the fields daily with her family and Mary was the only child in her family to go to school. She went to a missionary school for african american children that wasn't far from where she lived, so she walked to school everyday. When she returned home from school, she shared as much knowledge as she could from what she learned.

Mary later recived a scholarship to the Scotiary (now Barber-Scotia) College, a school for girls in Condord North Carolina. She married a man named Albert Mcleod Bethune, and they had one son. Unfortunatley they got a divorce and Mary went back to teaching and eventually became the school's president and moved on in 1942. She died in 1955 on May 18, in Daytona Texas.
How She Influenced
She changed the world by not only her leagcy in teaching, but by her founding of the national council for african american women.
