Karl Heinrich Marx was a German political philosopher. Marx was born in 1818 in Prussia, and was largely influenced by Immanuel Kant and other philosophers of the Enlightenment. While attending the University of Berlin, Marx grew increasingly wary of classical liberalism and its disregard for the behavior of the middle and working classes. When coupled with Marx's newfound friendship with socialist Friedrich Engles, this led to Marx laying out the groundwork for communism.
