Martin Luther

Martin Luther was born in Eisleben, Germany on November 10, 1483. His parents were Hans and Margarette Luther. When he was seven years old Luther began his education at a school in Mansfeld where he studied grammar, rhetoric, and logic. When he was eighteen Luther attented the Universtiy of Erfart and received a Master of Arts degree. Luther decided to become a monk after he was miraculously saved in a terrible storm. Luther was very upset to find so much corruption wihtin the church. He enrolled in the Universtiy of Wittenberg, received a doctorate, and became a professor of theology at the university. Beginning at the age of 30 Luther bagan to have spiritual enlightenment through his studies of scripture. Four years later Pope Leo X announced that the church would be offering indulgences. Indulgences were a way of buying yourself or someone you loved a way to heaven. Martin Luther was very upset by this and on October 31, 1517 he nailed a sheet of 95 theses to the door of All Saints' Church. Copies of the theses spread throughout Germany and Europe sparking the Protestant Reformation. Luther was ordered by the church to recant his theses, but Luther refused. Later Luther was summoned by the Diet of Worms, but Luthr still refused to recant his theses. Therefore, the council released the Edict of Worms which banned Luther's writings and delared him a convicted heretic. This meant that he was a condemned and wanted man. Friends then helped hide him in the Wartburg Castle where he translated the New Testament into German while he was hiding. In May 1522 Luther returned to Wittenberg Castle Church in Eisenach and began organizing a new church, Lutheranism. Luther then married a former nun, Katharina von Bora and had six children with her. For the rest of his life from that point on Luther served as the dean of theology at the University of Wittenberg. He suffered from many illnesses and eventually passed away on February 18, 1546 in Eisleben, Germany.

Martin Luther had many accomplishments throughout his life. One of these accomplishments was receiving a Master of Arts degree from the Universtiy of Erfart. He also received a doctorate from the University of Wittenberg and became a professor of theology at the university. Luther translated the New Testament into the German Language as well. However, Martin's biggest achievement was writing the 95 theses and influencing the Protestant Reformation. He also founded his own church, Lutheranism.

Martin Luther has changed our world today in many ways. He was very influential in the Protestant Reformation and fractured the Roman Catholic Church into new sects of Christianity. He also set in motion refrom within the Church.
