The planet Mars is named after the Roman god of War. In ancient times it was considered an important star and each culture always associated it with war or death.

The discovery of Mars is not credited to one person. Many astronomers and observers that range from the early Egyptians, to the Babylonians, Greeks, and Danish can be credited for discovering Mars.

Mars has a thin atmosphere, and it does not protect the Planet from the Suns radiation, nor does it do much to retain heat at the surface. Mars consists of 95% carbon dioxide, 3% nitrogen, 1.6% argon and the remander is traces of oxygen, water vapor, and other gases. It also consists of small particles of dust (mainly iron oxiode) which gives Mars its reddish color.

The albedo of Mars changes because of dust being lifted in the atmosphere during storm season. Since the atmosphere of Mars is very thin, its albedo, at 29 percent, is dominated by the relatively dark surface.

Mars has huge craters, volcanic mountains, canyons, and polar caps containing large amounts of solid carbon dioxide, or "dry ice." In the polar ice caps, significant amounts of water was discovered leading to the fact that there might be frozen layers of water under the planet's surface. Athough the planet's surface is now covered with dust and rocks, physical and chemical ecidence show that there might have been large quantities of liqid water flowing over the surface. Mars also has large dust storms that could last for weeks.
