[2015] Jade Singh: Marine Biology

Marine biology is the study of marine organisms, their behaviors, and their interactions with the environment. Marine biologists study all plant and animal life forms in the ocean. These life forms range from microscopic picoplankton to blue whales. This field is very broad, causing most researchers to select a particular area of interest and specialize in it. These areas can be based on a particular species, group, behavior, technique, or ecosystem.

Marine biology is considered to be a fairly competative field. The supply of marine biologists usually exceeds the demand. Furthermore, the number of government jobs, the federal and state governments being important employers, is limited. However, other employers include local governments, aquariums, museums, colleges and universities, and private research laboratories or consulting firms. According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, biological scientists held 91,300 jobs in 2008, only a small proportion of those individuals employed as marine biologists. The salary of a marine biologist varies based on factors such as job location, years of experience, and level of education achieved. Usually, salary for a marine biologists range from $40,000 for entry level work to more than $110,000 for scientists with significant experience and advanced degrees.

When studying to become a marine biologist, you can earn a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, and a Ph. D. Conversely, you only have to have at least a bachelor's degree to obtain ae entry-level job in the field. Towards the end of earning your master's degree, you should have establish your specialization interests. Additionally, you should have explored these interests through electives, independent study classes, and/or their theses. In order to conduct most independent research and teach at the postsecondary level in the field of marine biology, you must have a Ph.D. Completing a Ph.D. in marine biology has many requirments, such as passing qualifying exams and teaching some undergraduate courses. However, you only need a bachelor's degree to earn a Ph. D. Therefore, you do not need to obtain all three degrees in order to have a successful job in marine biology.
