Marie Curie was born Maria Sklodowska, on November 7, 1867 in Poland. As a child, Maria (Marie) was fascinated by science and physics. Marie studied at Sorbonne University in Paris, where she earned her master's degree in Physics in 1893. Marie met her husband by chance in 1894. While searching for a lab to work at, she was introduced to her new lab partner, Pierre Curie. Marie and her husband would go on to discover polonium and radium, two highly radioactive materials. They both won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903.

Marie Curie's most important accomplishment was the discovery of the Xray. This discovery lead to the portable Xray machine that was first used in World War I. Portable xrays are still used today and save many millions of lives a year!
