Maria Montessori 1870-1952

Primary WorkFrom 1896 to 1901, Montessori worked with and researched children experincing some form of mental retardation, illness, or disability. She traveled, studied, and spoke internationally, becoming an advocate for women's rights and education for mentally disabled children. In the early 1900's, Montessori wanted to work with mentally normal students and opened the Casa dei Bambini to enroll 50-60 kids ages 3-7. Here, Montessori discovered several of the educational principles she based her method of education on. Today's Montessori Preschools are named after Maria Montessori because they have adopted her teaching philosophies.

"The environment must be rich in motives which must lend interest to activity and invite the child to conduct his own experiences."

"When dealing with children there is greater need for observing than probing."

Students should: Teachers should:

1. Act freely2. Explore their own learning3. Learn from their mistakes

1. Observe student learning2. Direct physical development3. Create a learning environment to meet students' needs

Maria Montessori believed that students' independence was the goal of education. There are many ways that her educational principles aligned with UbD, but there were also ways that they differed.
