Marching Band

Outside of police and military organizations, modern marching bands commonly perform during parades and at pregame and halftime during football game. The first modern halftime show was given by the University of Illinois Marching Illini in 1907 at a game against the University of Chicago. That same year, the first formation, breaking the traditional military rangs on a football field, was the "Block P" created by Paul Spotts Smrick, director of the Purdue All-American Marching Band.

Although today marching bands are primarily a source of entertainment, many military traditions are still evident. Bands march in formation "dress" their ranks and "cover down" their files.
