His early works were inspired by going to a school where students studied artists like Caravaggio. He painted biblical scenes in the beginning. Toward the end of his career, he focused on every day life, much like the other Dutch Masters, and painted mainly women in moments of their daily lives. He died at age 43 with a lot of debt. He was not very popular outside of the Netherlands during his lifetime, and not many people paid for his work. It was only well after his death that he became popular. He only painted 35 or 36 paintings in his lifetime, and they are now very expensive!

Jan Vermeer’s father was an art dealer in Delft and exposed Vermeer to the different popular styles of the day. Vermeer’s wife, Catharina Boines, was a Catholic, where Vermeer was a Protestant. He converted his religion to marry her on April 5, 1653. In a place where most people were Protestant, this made him almost a second-class citizen. They had 11 children together.
Delft was a place with a lot of art being created and purchased by dealers. A special blue and white pottery was produced there, and is still very popular. The Dutch Masters painting in the day, like Rembrandt and Frans Hals, painted every day scenes. Vermeer also painted in this style.Vermeer also experimented with a type of artwork called camera obscura, which takes a camera that projects an image on to a canvas. The artist traces the image to show perspective.Vermeer was not very well known outside Delft because only local dealers purchased his works.
