Mao's Last Dancer

The story starts when Li is in Qingdao, in a very poor family, in the time of communist China. He finally starts school, when some people from Madame Mao's Beijeing Dance Academy come to select students to take back to the academy. Li is chosen, and he starts training for ballet at the academy. Furthermore Li is offered a scholarship in America, for a Summer School.

Mao's Last Dancer is a memoir of ballet dancer Li Cunxin. This book starts when Li is very young, and ends when he finishes his courier. This book was published in 2003, and is an autobiography, with a fictional background, making it interesting for the resder, especially for young readers. You cannot put this book down, and you do not have to like ballet to love it- you need a kind heart, and a love for friendship.

He enjoys this opportunity, and he applies for a passport to go back for a year. Finally his claim was received and he went to the Houston Academy for a year. He meets Elizabeth Mackey, and on his last week in America they get married, so Li could be able to stay in China. This did not go to plan- his marriage failed, and he spent 21 hrs locked up, in the Chinese Communist Party office in America, when he finally is allowed to stay and he defects. He becomes an amazing dancer, marries again to Mary McKendrey, and they dance together in many performances. Finally, Mary quits dancing, to help their deaf child, Sophie, and they now have 3 children. Li, Mary and his family move to Australia in 1995, where Li and Mary work in the Queensland Ballet.
