Manly in the past and present

The Beginning

In 1788, Manly was first named by Captain Arthur Phillip after the men in the Kay-ye-my clan living here. Phillip became Governor of New South Wales, the first state.

In the 1850s, Manly had been envisaged as a seaside resort by Henry Gilbert Smith.

In 1855, Smith built a wharf.

Is this the way to the Wharf?

In 1873, Smith made a ferry for the wharf.

First Mayor of Manly

Between 1877 and 1878, Colonel Thomas Rowe became the mayor of Manly

In 1902, William Gocher made the very first bathing suit for bathers and swimmers in Manly Beach.

In 1903, the first ever surf club was born.

In 1934, the Australian Air League, originally the 'Air Mindedness Development League' was founded by George Robey.

The Grand Opening

In 1937, Manly Town Hall was opened.

In 1946, rugby team Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles was founded the 1947 New South Wales Rugby Football League season.
