Manifest Destiny

Before the United States purchased Louisiana and the large amount of land past the Mississippi River, France owned. However, the United States was attempting to fullfill Manifest Destiny and wanted the land due to several ports In the end, the US made a deal with France and bought the land for 15 million.

Louisiana Purchase

Florida

One territory that the US gained in order to fulfill Manifest Destiny was Florida, which was owned by Spain Seminoles that lived in Florida had been robbing farms in Georgia and slaves were running away to find refuge in Spain's territory. The United States bought the land for 5 million dollars in 1819 to end the problem of the raids and the slaves

Manifest Destiny is the idea that the United States was destined to reach from the the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. Many Americans also used it to justify their actions in robbing other countries of their territories.

Texas

Texas belonged to Texas and it was one of the last territories needed to fulfill Manifest Destiny. US farmers were settling in Texas and ignoring the rules of Mexico, they had slaves and were a different religon. Texas won independednce from Mexico at the Alamo and when Texas wanted to be annexed into the States. When it was, it fulfilled Manifest Destiny.

Oregon

In the 1820's, the United States and England had agreed to "co-occupy" Oregon Country. However, The US wanted to take the land for themselvs, away from Britan and fulfill Manifest Destiny. In the end, the United States The United States ended gaining the land after the Treaty of 1846 that created a line so that the United States could fulfill manifest Destiny.

Mexican-American War

The Mexican- American War was started when Mexican soldiers killed 16 Americans on the Rio Grande. The war was over Texas, land that had been declared free from Mexico and a small amount of land above it. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The treaty allowed 15 million dollars to be paid to Mexico in exchange for the territory.
